Admission

Please report to Reception (1st floor) at the Day Surgery Centre (entrance at 133 Leinster Road) at the time given to you by St George’s Hospital staff. Nursing staff will complete admission procedures.

Following the initial admission process you will wait in the lounge before being shown to the pre-operative room where you will change into a theatre gown and have base line recordings taken. Your personal effects and clothes will be placed in a labelled bag and will remain with you.

After being seen by your surgeon and your anaesthetist, you will be taken to the operating theatre for your operation/procedure.

Parents with Children having Surgery

Children should bring pyjamas/nightdress and a favourite toy. St George's Hospital encourages one parent to stay with their child in the pre-operative area before surgery and also be available in the recovery room as soon as possible after they wake.

After your Operation - Discharge

After your operation, you will be taken to the recovery room. When you are fully awake and comfortable, you will change back into your own clothes and relax in the post recovery lounge. Refreshments are available if your surgeon or anaesthetist recommends this.

Discharge – Ready To Leave

Our staff will ensure you have clear written and verbal instructions on what to do after your operation and ensure you have either your medications and/or your prescription should they be required.

A follow-up appointment will be made for you to see your surgeon.

When you are ready to leave St George's Hospital our nursing staff will assist you to make contact with the person you have chosen to come and collect you.

Patients are strongly encouraged and advised not to drive themselves home.

St George’s Hospital encourages patients to arrange for a family member or close friend to stay with them for the first night following their operation/procedure.

Hospital Accounts

Hospital accounts should be paid within 7 days of the invoice date. Fees may be changed from time to time so please ensure you have an up-to-date understanding of the fee structure applying at the time of your admission. If you would like a guide of what the costs will be, please phone our Accounts Department on 0-3-355 1701.

Explanation of Charges

There will be three separate charges for your operation / procedure:

  • The Hospital
  • Your Surgeon
  • Your Anaesthetist – where applicable

Major credit cards (with the exception of Diners Club and American Express) and personal cheques are acceptable.

If you require any further information please telephone 0-3-355 6563 and our staff will be happy to assist you.

ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation)

If your treatment is to be covered by ACC, you MUST have written approval from them before you are admitted to Hospital.

When the ACC contribution is a part payment, you will be expected to pay the balance once you receive your account.

ACC fund a shared room. For a small additional cost you can request a single room (if available). Please ensure your request has been noted on your admission form.

Medical Insurance Claims

St George’s Hospital accepts all medical insurances including those covered by AA Insurance, Police Health Plan, Southern Cross, Sovereign, State, Tower and Unimed.

It is possible in most cases to obtain prior approval for your hospitalisation from your insurance company. This enables the insurance company to pay their share of the account rather than you paying first and having to claim a refund.

Your Clinical Record

Your Clinical Record is held in the Clinical Records Department at St George's Hospital for a period of approximately 15 years from the date of your last attendance.

In most instances your Surgeon will forward information to your GP but we are able to forward information to other health practitioners or health care facilities upon your request.

If you require information yourself, "Health Information Request" forms are available from the Hospital’s Main Reception, or can be posted to you by Clinical Records staff (downloadable here in pdf or word document format). They require personal identification and a description of the information you require.

For further information please contact Clinical Records on 03 355 9179.
