Membership of the Society

Membership of the St George's Hospital Society is through nomination and election by the Society members.

Prospective members are expected to have an interest in the wellbeing of the Hospital.

From its inception the Hospital has had a close link with the Anglican Church. While the Hospital cares for all denominations, membership of the Society is structured to preserve this Anglican linkage. There is a requirement that at least 90 per cent of Society members are also members of the Anglican Church.

The Society is the ultimate authority regarding matters affecting the future direction of the Hospital.

A Board of Directors reports to the Society and is responsible for matters of Governance ensuring the Hospital is both financially and medically viable.

Friends of St George's Hospital

The Friends of St George's Hospital was officially established less then 2 months after the opening of the Hospital in 1928. This group was charged with providing support for, and to create outside interest in the hospital. Many friends (mainly women) had banded together to raise money, initially before the hospital was built, through street collections, cake and produce stalls and the Christmas market.

Since those early days the Friends have continued to fundraise and support St. George's. In recent years, gifts to the hospital, in the form of Christmas trees and their decoration, a dryer for inpatients, and pictures and artwork have been provided for the patients enjoyment and comfort. The care of the Chapel, including flower arranging, and care of the chapel linen has also been an integral aspect of the Friends work. Friends will oversee the planned relocation of the Chapel, to a site more accessible to patients, when the heritage building is refurbished.

If you wish to join the Friends in their work of supporting the Hospital, please contact
