Our day surgical facility is equipped with the very latest in medical technology. Our staff are highly skilled and committed to delivering the very best in patient care. The recovery room is modern, well equipped and purpose built and our post-recovery lounge is designed to ensure you can relax and recuperate in comfort.
The Day Surgical sequence
- The day set for the operation is agreed upon by yourself in consultation with your surgeon.
- Patient phones St George’s the day prior to surgery to have appointment time confirmed.
- Our staff will give a clear indication about food and fluid restrictions.
- Patient arrives at St George’s normally 30 minutes prior to the time set for the operation.
- Following admission, the surgical team performs the operation.
- After the operation is finished the patient is transferred to the recovery room which is staffed by highly skilled and experienced nurses.
- When the patient has properly recovered the patient will be transferred to the post-recovery lounge to relax in comfort until they are ready to return home.
- Patient is discharged with responsible person to take them home, and remain with them for the first 24 hours.
What to bring - Checklist
- Bring any medications drugs or inhalers that you are currently, or have recently, been taking, if requested.
- Bring any X Rays (if appropriate).
- Bring Glasses, lenses, hearing aids or dentures if applicable.
- Please dress comfortably and casually in loose-fitting clothes.
- CHILDREN should bring pyjamas/nightdress and a favourite toy.
- Clothes for your operation will be provided by St George's.
- Patients are encouraged to leave valuables at home.
- Wear as little makeup as possible.
Arrival
Please arrive at the time given to you by St George’s Staff. All patients should first report to Reception at the Day Surgery Centre which is located on the first floor where admission procedures will be completed.
Following registration, you will have a short wait in the lounge before being shown to the pre-operative room where you will change into a theatre gown. Your personal effects and clothes will be placed in a bag and will remain with you.
After being seen by your surgeon and your anaesthetist, you will be taken to the operating theatre for your operation/procedure.
Child Patients
Children should bring pyjamas/nightdress and a favourite toy. St George's encourages one parent to stay with their child in the pre-operative area before surgery and also be available in the recovery room as soon as possible after they wake.
After your operation
After your operation, you will be taken to the recovery room. When you are fully awake and comfortable, you will change back into your own clothes and relax in the post recovery lounge. Refreshments are available if your surgeon or anaesthetist recommend this.
Upon Discharge – Ready To Leave
Our staff will ensure you have clear written and verbal instructions on what to do after your operation. Our staff will ensure you have either your medications and/or your prescription should they be required.
A follow-up appointment will be made for you to see your surgeon. When you are ready to leave St George's our nursing staff will assist you to make contact with the person you have chosen to come and collect you.
Patients are strongly encouraged and advised not to drive themselves home.
St Georges encourages patients to arrange for a family member or close friend to stay with them for the first night following their operation/procedure.
