MIDWIFERY EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
St George’s Maternity Unit is an approved education provider authorised by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand 2005. The following courses will be offered to midwives who are participating in the recertificaton programme as directed by the Midwifery Council.

Technical skills workshop – Compulsory Education A two-day programme that covers the components outlined by Midwifery Council for the recertificaton programme for registered midwives. This course can be completed as two single one-day sessions, or concurrently over a two-day period. It is required that each midwife undertakes this course once during a three-year period. Experienced midwives will facilitate this course. Enjoy a small group setting with opportunity for discussion, reflection and practical training.
Topics covered during the period 2008 • Postnatal assessment of women to six weeks • Newborn assessment to six weeks • Handover to well-child service at 4-6 weeks • Perineal suturing and repair • Intravenous cannulation– focus on hydration in labour and management of PPH • Shoulder dystocia • Undiagnosed breech

Breastfeeding Workshop – Compulsory Education
A one day programme, approved by the Midwifery Council to update on evidence-based guidelines of breastfeeding management.

Adult CPR (Level 4) - Compulsory education - cost $20 Adult Cardiopulmonary resuscitation based on the Level Four NZ Resuscitation Council Guidelines
Session time: 2 hrs Class size: 8 Instructor ratio: 1-4 participants Instructors Qualifications: NZRC Level 6 instructor – St Georges Hospital NZRC level 6 certified staff member.

Breastfeeding Workshop – Elective Education 10 pts per full day session
Cost $50 per day for LMC midwives - Booking essential
Breastfeeding update - "New" anatomy & practice implications, breast milk composition, immunology, obesity and breastfeeding, breast cancer and breastfeeding.
Expressing update - Physiology, milk ejection reflex issues, risk factors for lactation challenges, helpful strategies, medications and breastfeeding.
Attachment, physiology, biology, birth and breastfeeding - principles of attachment, mother-baby separation, bio-behavioural regulators, oxytocin responses, skin-to-skin care and remedial mothering.
Birth intervention and potential effects on breastfeeding - contemporary birthing practices, lactation and breastfeeding. Short term feeding interventions.
Challenges to breastfeeding - clinical scenarios, discussion, case studies, group work.
International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk substitutes and subsequent, relevant WHA resolutions - historical and contemporary look at the Code and the current global and NZ situation.
