Breastfeeding Support

St George's Maternity Centre supports and encourages mothers to maintain long term breastfeeding of their infants. The Centre is accredited with the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative – a global campaign that aims to encourage and recognise maternity facilities that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding.

All staff at St George's Maternity are experienced and trained in providing care for breastfeeding mothers.

While some mothers will find breastfeeding comes naturally, others can find the experience more challenging and require extra assistance. Breastfeeding is a learning experience that requires time and patience, and sometimes needing several attempts to get it right. While you are in hospital we will assist you with learning parenting skills, how to feed your baby and recognise newborn characteristics.

St George's Maternity provides a Lactation Consultant who is available for individual breastfeeding assistance, a trained Breastfeeding Peer counsellor and experienced maternity staff to help you.

Drop in Clinic

As from Monday 1 February 2016 there will be changes to the St George's Maternity Breastfeeding 'Drop in' Clinic.  This is due to the redevelopment of the Hospital and we are using this opportunity to improve the service to women.

As a result, the 'Drop in' Clinic will now be by an appointment system only.  This will improve privacy and individualised care planning.  Women will need to ring St George's Maternity Centre Reception (0-3-375 6020) to book a 30 minute 'one on one' appointment with the Lactation Consultant.

Antenatal Breastfeeding Classes

Our Lactation Consultant Sandra Wilson provides a session to assist women to successfully breastfeed. These classes are free and available to all women and their partners. It is good to book for a class when you are around 34 weeks pregnant.

To book into these classes please phone +64 3 375 6337. Your booking will be confirmed by Sandra and advice on the location will be given to you.

Class dates from November 2016 are:

  • 3 November
  • 17 November
  • 1 December
  • 15 December
