St George’s has now completed the first stage of a three-stage project to significantly
modernise and expand the services on site.
The St George’s vision is to create a one-stop site, offering a comprehensive range of hospital and
medical services for the convenience of patients, medical specialists, surgeons, visitors and
allied medical professionals.
On completion of the third stage there will be a wide range of consulting rooms housing 50
to 60 medical practitioners, X-ray facilities, laboratory services, pharmacy, conference rooms,
cafés and car park building.
The Three Phases of the Redevelopment
Stage I:
Completed September 2002, the Canon Wilford Wing.
Featured in this stage are two new wards, four theatres, consulting rooms,
café, pharmacy and medical laboratory. A new recovery unit adjoins this new block and the new building links to the existing hospital building
via a glass atrium.
- Basement - Underground car parking for clinical staff
- Ground floor - Retail services including a pharmacy and gift shop, cafe, laboratory, and consulting rooms
- First floor - Theatre and Recovery linked to the existing Day Surgery unit
- Second floor - 31 bed surgical and medical ward - Randolph
- Third floor - 31 bed surgical and medical ward - Cressy
Stage II:
Car park and consulting room building (expected completion 2005)
To make maximum use of the land while providing much needed additional car
parking space this new building will provide three levels of car parking, one underground and two above.
In addition the top floor of this building will provide an additional 30,000 sq ft
of consulting space - almost doubling the present consulting room capacity on the site.
- Basement - 100 car parks underground
- First floor - 100 car parks
- Second floor - 100 car parks
- Third floor - 30,000 sq ft for consulting rooms
Stage III:
Refurbishment of heritage hospital building (expected completion 2008)
St George’s Hospital will earthquake strengthen the heritage hospital building,
which opened in 1928. Its interior will be completely gutted and rebuilt while the
exterior will remain largely unchanged.
