Reducing our total carbon emissions by 30%
August 16, 2024
Under St George’s Sustainability Policy, the hospital has made a commitment to reduce its CO2 emissions by 30% within six years under a new decarbonisation project.
The project found that LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) is the single largest contributor of the hospital’s emissions, and is used for essential sterilisation and laundry processes, hot water and room heating purposes.
However, this LPG use equates to approximately 55% of the hospital’s total CO2 emissions.
In partnership with the government’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) St George’s will add three electric boilers to the steam and heating systems. This will significantly minimise LPG use and reduce those emissions by 742 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
This decarbonisation project reduces the hospital’s total emissions by 30% (based on its 2018 levels) by 2030 and marks a big step in St Georges’ journey to meet its sustainability aspirations.
The project is well underway and fully operational by April 2025.
